FAQ

FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS

Everything you need to know before getting started. Can't find your answer? Send us a message above.

How long does it take to get a Black Belt in BJJ?

On average, 10–15 years of consistent training. This varies based on frequency, competition experience, and academy standards. The journey itself is the reward.

What does BJJ stand for?

BJJ stands for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu a grappling-based martial art focused on ground fighting and submissions, refined by the Gracie family in Brazil from Japanese Judo.

How to tie a belt?

Your coach will show you on your first class don't stress about it beforehand. Fold it at the midpoint, wrap twice around the waist, and finish with a flat knot. It becomes second nature fast.

What is the best age to start BJJ?

Any age. We train kids from 4 and adults well into their 40s and 50s. BJJ's leverage-based system means technique matters far more than age or size. The best time to start is today.

How long to get a blue belt in BJJ?

Typically 1–3 years of consistent training. A Blue Belt marks the shift from total beginner to someone with solid foundational technique and positional understanding.

What are the belts in BJJ?

Adult belts: White → Blue → Purple → Brown → Black. Each holds up to four stripes before promotion. Kids follow an extended system with more colours recognising smaller stages of progress.

What is the origin of BJJ?

BJJ grew from Kodokan Judo brought to Brazil by Mitsuyo Maeda in the early 1900s. The Gracie family refined it into a system where leverage and technique overcome size and strength.
